Jim Pokorney

Jim Pokorney is a co-founder and President of Cardious. Prior to Jim’s activities at Cardious he founded Medical Elements, LLC, a medical device design consulting firm. For ten years as leader of Medical Elements, Jim provided design and project management services to medical device start-up companies, including leading the product design and manufacturing start-up of an angioplasty product line in China. Jim has more than twenty five years experience in medical device design and manufacturing, including seven years at Abbott Laboratories as a senior product engineer and seven years at St. Jude Medical as a research manager. Jim holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of St. Thomas, a mechanical engineering degree from Washington University, and a master’s degree in engineering management from the University of Utah.

Kem Schankereli

Kemal Schankereli is a co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Cardious. Prior to Kem’s activities at Cardious he served as Chief Technical Officer for Heart Leaflet Technologies and Vice President of Research and Development at Edwards Lifesciences, Inc. Kem has more than twenty five years experience in the cardiovascular device arena and has been key in the development of numerous long term implant devices including Hemashield, a preclotted vascular conduit; Peri-Strips, a pulmonary patch; the first mitral pericardial valve (Edwards Inc.); and various sealant materials. Kem was academically trained in biology and chemistry at Farleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ and holds a master’s degree in biology from Montclair University.

Patrick McCarthy, MD

Dr. Patrick McCarthy is a co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Cardious. Dr. McCarthy is chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and co-director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Il. He has achieved national and international recognition in the field of complex adult cardiac surgery, including valves, cardiac transplantation, mechanical ventricular assist devices, coronary artery bypass, minimally invasive surgery, aneurysm repair and atrial fibrillation ablation. He has given over 325 lectures, has been a visiting professor 34 times and has lectured on six continents. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 papers and 30 book chapters. He is on the editorial board of five medical journals and is a member and officer in numerous professional societies. Dr. McCarthy is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his general and cardiac surgery training at the Mayo Clinic and completed a special heart and lung transplantation fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center.

Nancy Ness

Nancy Ness is the Chief Financial Officer for Cardious. Prior to working with Cardious, Nancy has worked as acting CFO for fifteen medical device companies in start-up or early operation stages of development. She has been integrally involved in multiple private equity/private placements and bridge financing transactions. She has experience in all facets of small medical device finances, from capital raising, to operations, to sell side acquisitions. Nancy holds a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of St. Thomas and has passed the CPA exam.
